Louis’ Lunch, located at 263 Crown Street in New Haven, is widely regarded as the birthplace of the modern hamburger. According to legend, proprietor Louis Lassen was asked by a customer in 1900 to make “something he could eat on the run.”

In response, the man was given a blend of ground steak trimmings between two slices of toast — a hybrid of a sandwich and a burger.

More than a century later, Louis’ Lunch, which is now in its fourth generation of family ownership, continues to serve up the exact same sandwich: a six-ounce flame-broiled burger served on white toast with customer’s choice of cheese, tomato and onion.

Unlike many burgers, the ones at Louis’ Lunch are served without condiments like ketchup, mustard or mayo.

“You can practically taste the nostalgia,” says The Daily Meal, which ranked the establishment at no. 14.
