'The King' Comes to Chappaqua

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y.-- “The King” made an appearance at the New Castle Summer Sounds Concert Series Wednesday night when Elvis impersonator Tony Liguori, Jr. and his band Bill Turner and Blue Smoke, played to the new town gazebo to a large crowd on New Castle Recreation Field.

This is the first time Liguori has played the gazebo stage in Chappaqua but he has performed at the Meadowlands in New Jersey, on cruise ships and in Atlantic City casinos, playing a mix of the Elvis hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s for 20 years.

“This is a beautiful venue, it really seems like a nice place to play with the crowds all gathering on the grass,” Liguori said.

Jimmy Colarusso, a trumpet player in the band Bill Turner and Blue Smoke, spent 10 months on the road with the real Elvis Presley in 1971. He also plays in Joe Battaglia and The New York Big Band, an upscale dance, jazz and latin band.

“I played with Elvis in ’71 but I also played with The Stylistics, Dionne Warwick, Al Martino and The Jimmy Dorsey Band,” Colarusso said. “I’m a sideman so when someone needs a trumpet player they call me. I’ve played with a lot of different bands that way.”

Liguori has been impersonating Elvis now for 20 years, which all started after watching Elvis on TV with his grandmother.

“I used to watch him on TV, in the movies with his guitar and all the girls and I was like, ‘I want to be like him!’” Liguori said.

“I’ve always been an Elvis fan and this is such a nice location for a concert,” said Carol Iannaccone, of Pleasantville. “This is a beautiful thing, bringing the community together here at this beautiful park. I’m a lover of the outdoors so when this is over, I won’t want to leave!”

Frank Messina, of Armonk, who enjoyed the concert with Ms. Iannaccone agreed.

“I love the music,” Messina said, “We like to come to all the concerts here.”

Bill Turner was the lead guitarist for Bill Haley and The Comets, known for the hit “Rock Around The Clock."
