MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- One aspect of Mamaroneck varsity field hockey that Jessica Gardiner has always enjoyed is the level of competition.
Coach John Savage has made it a priority, annually, to schedule the most difficult non-league competition for his team in order to prepare them for the Section 1 and New York State Championships. Beginning in 2004, the philosophy has worked.
The Tigers have played in every Section 1 final since, winning five Class A titles, a state championship in 2004 and playing in the last two state-title games.
Mamaroneck opens its 2011 season, Wednesday, at Bronxville, a perennial Section 1 power.
Its clear each year who the Section 1 powers will be, said Mamaroneck senior Jessica Gardiner. If we ever suggest to Coach Savage who we want to play, he always has it scheduled long before.
Mamaroneck was notified, by Savagem of its schedule at the beginning of August. This gave Mamaroneck added incentive to start practice and preparation for the season.
Weve been working hard for the past two weeks, said Gardiner, who will attend Colgate next year and play field hockey. We are looking forward to it. This is a great opportunity for us to apply everything we have been working on.
