Bronxville Girls Win Manhattan Invitational Race

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. ? Mary Cain raced to a first-place finish Saturday to lead the Bronxville High School girls cross country team to victory in the Girls A Race at the Manhattan College Invitational.

Cain, a junior, ran the 2.5-mile course at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx in 14:03 to better her best time of 14:42 this fall. Teammate Kaitlin Ryan, an eighth grader who runs with the varsity team finished 10th (15:30), and Hilary Rizzo (15:41), Courtney Campbell (15:52), Argentina Chrappa (16:04), Emilie Hoffer (16:09) and Morgan Nobles (16:10) were among the top 30 runners.

The Manhattan College Invitational is the largest one-day cross country meet in the country and included 355 teams this year.

Bronxville's edged Warwick High School 68-75 in the A Race (varsity), and the junior varsity and freshmen teams placed second and third respectively in their races.

"Mary’s time is a new Bronxville junior record, bettering her 14:42 of earlier this season, and Kaitlin’s 15:30 is a new Bronxville eighth-grade record, bettering the 15:40 of Henrietta Miers," Bronxville coach Jim Mitchell said. "The 15:26.44 team average is Bronxville’s second fastest team average ever at Van Cortlandt Park."

Veronica Walsh (16:58) and Saige Sunier (17:17) led the junior varsity girls. Delia Hayes (16:32) placed third and Amelia Phillips (16:43) fifth to lead the freshman team.

The Bronxville cross country team will run at the Coaches Invitational Meet Saturday at Bowdoin Park in upstate Wappingers Falls.
