The older students work with second- and third-grade students to build relationships with the younger kids, serve as role models, and assist in other ways during lunch and recess.
“The students who are involved are not only responsible, but they are very warm and giving and really understand what it takes to engage with and help a younger student,” said Assistant Principal Adrienne Laitman.
Laitman meets with the older students for training to enhance communication and conflict resolution skills.
Groups of fifth-graders are taking part in the six-week program, which has older kids paired with younger kids every second day.
“I love playing with the little kids and I just love hanging out with them because they have all these creative ways to play games and ways to help each other,” one of the fifth-graders said. She recently joined younger kids on swings and played basketball in recess.
