Eastchester Student Speaks in Favor of Bond

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The student member of the Eastchester Board of Education expressed her support for the proposed $12 million bond that will pay for an expansion of the middle school at Tuesday night’s board meeting.

Danielle Jensen, a senior at Eastchester High School, said the saying, “Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders,” is seen throughout the halls on her side of the combined middle and high school. But Jensen said the atmosphere at her school does not support that philosophy.

"It is so overcrowded," Jensen said. "It's so hard to get out of class and then you get stuck in the hallways."

Jenson said there are 90 students in her gym class.

"I think it is really important to give the students extra space, smaller classes and more room in the hallways," she said.

Jensen said that she has seen the board of education put a lot of time and effort into the bond proposal and hopes the community will support it.

"I just want everyone to know it is really important for the students to support the bond for the sake of the students," Jensen said.

The district will hold a vote on Wednesday, Oct. 12 for the $12.7 million bond. If passed, a new addition will wrap around the side of the building, where the gym is currently located.

The project will add 14 new classrooms, including two new science labs. Five additional bathrooms will be added and the existing cafeteria will be expanded. Currently, middle school students eat lunch in shifts and only have 20 minutes per shifts.

The board of education revealed a video made by district officials and Jeff Capuano, high school principal, and Walter Moran, middle school principal.

The video can be seen by visiting the board’s website.

Paul Doyle, president of the board of education, said the board is doing all it can to get the word out and make the public realize the seriousness and need for the bond.

The board of education will meet for a work session on Oct. 11, the day before the bond vote.
