BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – A pair of assemblies earlier this month allowed students at Bronxville Elementary School to demonstrate how they’ve been contributing to the greater school community.

Designed for students, staff and administrators to celebrate their work around the school’s character education and project-based learning experiences, the Jan. 6 assemblies provided a platform for students to discuss their actions as part of the Lunch Buddy and Buddy Bench programs and during the Student Council’s toy drive, according to a statement from the school.

Other students highlighted their fifth-grade project-based learning assignments, which included a discussion focused on what a 28th Constitutional Amendment might mean to our society, officials said.

“All of the students who spoke were passionate, engaged and able to relate what they were doing to the idea of engaged citizenship,” said Principal Tricia Murray.

Also recognized during the assemblies were students who have “demonstrated exceptional character and gone above and beyond to help a classmate,” according to the district.

According to the school, students recognized for their character took a variety of steps to help others from asking fellow students to play during recess to properly showing empathy and compassion to a classmate.

“Those students serve as an inspiration for others to act in positive ways as well,” said Assistant Principal Adrienne Laitman, who led the assemblies. “We hope our students took away an understanding about the importance of being engaged citizens and how much we value that work in our school.”

According to the statement, the assemblies were part of the school’s Be3 program, which aims to ensure each student thrives in a positive learning environment.
