BRONXVILLE, N.Y. Garden fans can get a peek behind the hedges Saturday as the Bronxville Beautification Councils Fifth Annual Garden Tour opens the gardens at six Bronxville homes to the public.
The gates are going to open for only four hours to exquisite gardens that you otherwise would not get to see, including an intimate jewel-box garden, said Carolyn Moriarty, a spokeswoman for the council. Its a beautiful way for families to spend an afternoon, especially since the forecast is for a sunny day.
The stops on the tour, disclosed only to ticket-holders shortly before the noon to 4 p.m. event begins, will showcase small English-country style gardens and expansive ornamental gardens with statues and reflecting pools, said Moriarty.
One features a statue by famed sculptor Harriet Whitney Frishmuth, whose work is displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, she added.
The $20 tickets will be available Saturday at Village Hall or in advance at local businesses. Visitors will receive maps for self-guided tours and have an opportunity to purchase $2 raffle tickets for prizes that include a $500 gardening consultation with landscaping firm Breath of Spring. Participants can end the tour at a wine and cheese reception at a local home that will be noted on the map, Moriarty said.
Money raised through the event and raffle are used by the council for beautification projects around the village, including the hanging flower baskets on lamp posts, landscaping around the railroad guardrail and other plantings near the train station and around the village, she said.
