BRONXVILLE, N.Y. A dozen nonunion Bronxville village employees, including the village administrator and police chief, will receive 1.5 percent pay increases after the village board approved the measure at its monthly meeting Monday night.
The raises are retroactive to June 1 for the 2012-13 fiscal year. But union workers, including police and library are entering a second year without any wage increases because no contract has been inked since May 31, 2011. Library workers, who have not previously had a contract, are also entering a second year without raises.
Talks with all three unions representing village employees are in the early stages, Bronxville Mayor Mary Marvin said. Village officials in the past have waited for those agreements to be completed before setting raises for other staff, but this year they went ahead with the changes.
We dont want these people to wait until all the processes with the various unions are completed, Marvin said. While weve done that in the past, we have this money in our budget this year, and we decided this is what we can honestly and prudently give to show how much we respect their hard work.
The 1.5 percent hike for nonunion personnel was settled on by the village trustees in an April budget work session. In the past, raises for nonunion employees have paralleled those of other workers, as is reflected in the 4 percent increase for both in 2010 and 0 percent for all in 2011, Village Administrator Harold Porr said.
Union workers could still get a raise for the year later because a new collective bargaining agreement could include a retroactive date for any negotiated salary increases, he said.
In other actions, the board:
Approved the transfer of $11,350 to buy a new copier from funds leftover from costs related to the issuance of a 2011 bond issue.
Awarded a curb restoration project to lowest bidder Tony Casale Inc., a firm that has previously completed projects in the village. Marvin asked Porr to examine whether the village could in the future bundle that work with similar projects in Tuckahoe and Eastchester, similar to the projects to combine black-topping of streets in the town.
Accepted a $2,000 unrequested donation from the Hilltop Association for the repair of stone pillars on Valley Road.
Reminded residents that the deadline for paying village taxes without penalty is July 2.
