According to the City of Peekskill Police Chief Donald Halmy, the teen, a Peekskill resident, was arraigned on a second-degree murder charge based on his role in the stabbing death of Joaquin Salazar on Saturday, Nov. 28.

In addition, the teen was also charged with assault for the serious injuries he caused to a second 18-year-old man he stabbed.

The stabbings stemmed from an incident on Saturday, in which a group of individuals met up in the parking lot of China Pier in Peekskill around 9:15 p.m.

An altercation broke out among the group and during the melee the two men were stabbed by the 17-year-old, who was also injured in the fight, Halmy said.

All three were then taken by friends to New York-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital for treatment and all were subsequently transferred to the Westchester Medical Center due to the severity of the injuries.

While at Westchester Medical, Salazar succumbed to his injuries and Peekskill officers placed the suspect in custody.

The suspect remained at Westchester Medical under police custody and was released on Monday, Nov. 30.

After his release, he was arraigned on the charges and remanded to Woodfield Cottage, a juvenile detention center.

Salazar, who graduated in 2019, played soccer at Peekskill High School and was considered one of the team's high scorers throughout his years as a member of the Red Devils.

The Peekskill Police Department continues to investigate the stabbing and anyone with information is urged to contact the Detective Division at 914-737-8000.
