Tuckahoe PD Warn Against Identity Theft During Holidays

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. – Tuckahoe Police are issuing a reminder to residents to be mindful of identity theft over the holiday season, saying that there have recently been an increase in such crimes.

"Everyone should go on line to check their credit card statements carefully and frequently over the holiday season," said Lt. Ray Stabile. "This is usually the time of year when we see an increase in these kinds of crimes."

Stabile said a village resident came to police earlier this week to report $7,904 had been illegally charged to his credit card.

"There were purchases made at Best Buy, an Apple Store and a Universal Sportswear Store” on Dec. 8 and 9, Stabile said.

In October, Eastchester Police Lt. Jeff Hunter said there was an arrest at the Citibank on White Plains Road when a woman was trying to use a stolen ATM card to get money.

Hunter said a search of the woman’s possessions uncovered a skimming device. He agreed that there is an increase in identity thefts over the holiday season.

"I would say to be careful whenever you give out your personal information over the phone or on the Internet," he said. "Be sure to you know who you are talking to over the phone and be sure you are using a secure network online."

Back in September, Bronxville Police discovered a skimming device hidden in the ATM machine at the HSBC Bank located on Pondfield Road along with a hidden camera, trained to capture the PIN number while the customer was using his or her card.

At the time, Bronxville Police Chief Christopher Satriale suggested ATM users try to wiggle their card as they are inserting it into the machine. ATMs without skimmers will not wiggle at all. If there is a skimmer, the slot will seem loose, he said. The skimmer might even pop off into your hands and if it does seem loose, you should alert the bank so they can check into it further.
