Knitters Wanted at the Bronxville Library

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- The Bronxville Public Library not only provides the warmth of knowledge, but just good old warmth as well.

From September 7th to the 14th of December, the library will host its third trial of "Knitting for Charity." Each Wednesday from 11 am to 12 pm, the library will be open for knitters of all ages.

Christine Utchel, the adult reference librarian, is excited to see what the turnout of another adult program will be.

"'Knitting for Charity' has gotten great turnouts before, and we expect more of the same."

In the past, the morning hour has brought together many members of the town, but also those of the global community.

"We had people from their 80's to kids just graduated from college. It's a nice and diverse group," says Laura Eckley, the director of the library. "We had people from four different countries: Sweden, Columbia, Austria and Japan. It was a great way to meet other people and to spend time on a community project."

Created a year ago by Eckley and Utchel, the program gives the donated scarves to St. Christopher's Inn, a homeless shelter in Garrison, NY. The men in the shelter do much work outside in the cold winter months, and thus would welcome the warmth scarves can bring.

Those who wish to come to the program will also need to know how to knit, as there will be no instruction. The preference of product is of men's scarves, but women and children's material are welcome as well. Purchased scarves are also accepted as donations.

If you cannot make it to the allotted knitting time, you may knit when you can at home and drop off the items whenever the Library is open.
