Goodwill Donation Center Opens

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Got a worn out chair or a pair of shoes you don't want anymore? Bought a new TV and don't know what to do with the old one?

Residents of Eastchester and nearby towns can now take stuff they'd like to give away to Goodwill's new donation center, slated to open on Thursday. Located at 19 Mill Road near the Town Hall, the new donation center will open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will accept almost everything: TVs, computers, clothing, small furniture, books, records, CDs, DVDs, game systems and other household items. (Electronic devices don't need to be operational.)

"We have donation centers in our stores, but that's the first that will only take donations," said Lauretta Cunningham, Goodwill's senior vice president for retail operations.

She oversees 40 stores in the Goodwill's New York and New Jersey region, including the Westchester County ones at New Rochelle, Elmsford, Croton and Somers.

Goodwill, a non-profit organization, uses its network of more than 2,500 thrift stores to fund community-based services such as job training and placement.

"The Eastchester donation center will support Goodwill's mission of finding jobs for individuals facing economic challenges and other barriers to employment," Cunningham said.

As for why the company chose Eastchester, she had a very simple answer.

"We just thought it was a great location for donations," she said.
