EASTCHESTER, N.Y. Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D - Harrison) was in a meeting in Washington DC on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.
"We did not realize what was happening at first, but then I ran back to my office and tried to get through to New York.
County Legislator Sheila Marcotte (R, C - Eastchester, Tuckahoe) was in her kitchen feeding her 18 month old son.
"I had the television off," Marcotte said. "I didn't hear about it until my mom called."
Eastchester Supervisor Anthony Colavita was playing golf at Lake Isle.
"I was there with two police officers and one of them had on their radio and we heard it," Colavita said. "At first we thought it was a small plane."
Marcotte and Lowey joined Colavita Sunday morning at a small ceremony held at Town Hall to remember those lost on that day.
At the 9/11 memorial clock in front of Town Hall, Colavita remembered the names of those from the town who were lost that day.
"At this time 10 years ago this country had one of its weakest moments," Colavita said. "But at the end of this day, this country had one of its finest moments."
Tuckahoe Mayor Steve Ecklond attended the Eastchester ceremony and remembered the sunny clear day Sunday was much like to the Tuesday one decade ago.
Ecklond and Colavita also remembered then-Village Trustee Michael Mchugh who died at the World Trade Center.
"As soon as I heard about it, I thought of my friend, Mike." Colavita said.
StacyAnn Keiler, of Eastchester, brought her three children, Zach, 11, Sammi, 5, and Jax, 1, to the early morning ceremony.
"I wanted them to remember it," Keiler said. "Zach was 18 months old, I left work, picked him up from day care and went straight to our church and sat in the front row.
Keiler said the events of 9/11 are not frightening to her children.
"To them it is history," she said. "They are not connected to it the same way we are."
Marcotte reminded the crowd about how many Americans proudly displayed the American Flag in the wake of the terrorist attacts and urged them to do so again.
"Just that little gesture speaks means so much," she said.
