Bronxville Bookseller Offers Recommendations

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- If you were planning on spending the beautiful weekend in your backyard raking leaves, you may want to put down that rake and pick up a book and enjoy the waning days of Indian summer.

If you are looking for something to read, Gene Sgarlata of Womraths Book Store on Pondfield Road in the village has a couple of suggestions.

"'The Night Circus" by Erin Morganstern, is pretty good." Sgarlata said. "It's about two illusionists competing in a very unusual circus."

"The Night Circus" is somewhat of a love story but also filled with suspense and competition in a bizarre contest.

Sgarlatta also recommended "State of Wonders," by Ann Patchett. Patchett also wrote the "Magician's Assistant."

In this book, a research pharmacist follows her mentor into the Amazon jungle. The first scientist disappeared in that jungle just as she was close to making an important medical discovery. Now the second scientist is in search of her colleague and the life saving and financially advantageous work that was ongoing.

""The Sense of an Ending," by Julian Barnes, is a real page turner, Sgarlatta said. Winner of the 2011 Man Booker Prize, the novel is about a middle aged man whose childhood, which he never much thought about, comes back with a vengeance to haunt him.

If you are looking for non-fiction, Sgarlatta recommends Bill O'Reilly's book, "Killing Lincoln."

"Of course, the other big sellers we have are Steve Jobs and Jacqueline Kennedy," Sgarlatta said.

Sgarlatta has all of these books in stock among lots of other new titles. "I always tell my customers if I don't have it, I am happy to order it for you."
