BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Dr. Stephen Onesti, of Bronxville, has been named a 2015 Super Doctor, an honor designated to no more than 5 percent of physicians in the New York metro area, according to the awarding organization MSP Communications.
Specializing in surgery of the spine, Onesti is an attending neurosurgeon with Neurological Surgery, P.C. He also is chief of South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Division of Neurosurgery.
“Dr. Onesti is a leader in his field, and we congratulate him on being named to this selective list,” said Michael Brisman, CEO of NSPC. “This honor is just one confirmation that NSPC has some of the Northeast’s leading neurosurgeons.”
Onesti has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and abstracts on spinal surgery and related topics. He also co-edited a book on degenerative disc disease.
Between 2003-11, Onesti was chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Brooklyn’s SUNY Downstate Health Sciences Center.
He is immediate past president of the New York State Neurosurgical Society and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
MSP Communications invites physicians to nominate colleagues whom they know are exceptional in their fields. They are asked to consider the question, "If you needed medical care in one of the following specialties, which doctor would you choose?" Physicians may not self-nominate.
The group’s staff also searches medical databases, online sources and publications for physicians who have attained certain credentials.
Candidates are evaluated on 10 criteria of peer recognition and professional achievement. Nominees are then grouped into specialties and their nominations are scored by a blue-ribbon panel of physicians from their respective specialties.
Lastly, the organization totals points candidates receive from nominations, research, and blue-ribbon panel review. The highest-scoring doctors land on the Super Doctors list.
