Howard J. Nugent, age 52, was taken into custody on Tuesday, April 15, after authorities observed him leaving his home on Van Wagner Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie, the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office Drug Task Force announced on Wednesday, April 16.

The arrest came after Drug Task Force Agents made multiple undercover purchases of cocaine from Nugent in various locations throughout Dutchess County, authorities said.

When a marked Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit vehicle attempted to stop him at the time of his arrest, Nugent allegedly drove away in his vehicle, striking an unmarked police vehicle before crashing into a light pole on Taft Avenue.

He was arrested at the scene without further incident, according to the Task Force.

Authorities then executed a search warrant at Nugent’s residence, where they seized large quantities of cocaine packaged for sale. Investigators also recovered additional drugs concealed in the vehicle he had been driving, authorities said.

Nugent is charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

Additional charges related to the alleged sale of narcotics are pending.

After being processed by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, Nugent was held at the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department. He was arraigned on Wednesday, April 16, and released to the supervision of probation per New York State law.
