Horowitz has been one of the most consistent players for the 9-5 Bears this season. In January alone, she put up point totals of 23, 14, 10, 23, 16 and 18. She also routinely pulled down double-digit rebounds in several games.

“Summer’s awesome. She’s had a great year. She’s a double-double machine,” said Briarcliff coach Don Hamlin. “Every day she gives us double figures in rebounding and scoring. She’s just relentless in her attitude and her competiveness.”

Briarcliff lost senior Brianna Celaj to an injury in early December. Since then, particularly in January, Horowitz stepped up and has been instrumental in the Bears’ success.

“Brianna is my best friend and it’s really hard to watch her not play because she’s so dedicated,” Horowitz said. “So, I kind of feel like I’m playing for both of us when I walk on the court. It gives me extra fire.”

Horowitz has more than capably filled the void caused by Celaj’s absence, but Hamlin knew the senior would have a solid year.

“Even before Bri got hurt, Sum was playing really well,” Hamlin said. “It would have been a nice two-headed monster there.”

Horowitz picked up a basketball at age 3 and has been playing competitively since fourth grade. She was the sixth man for the Bears as a sophomore and broke into the starting lineup in her junior year.

Earlier this season, Horowitz went to the Westchester County Center to watch a slam dunk tournament. While there, she realized just how badly she wants to return there for the playoffs in her final high school season.

“It ignited some of the passion in me I didn't realize I had,” Horowitz said. “And I just want to make it back there for one more game.”
