Pace Softball Splits With Chowan, Loses First Game

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pace’s softball team lost its first game of the season as the Setters split a doubleheader with Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Pace won the first game, 3-2, but lost the second, 3-1. The Setters are now 7-1 while the Hawks moved to 10-16.

Chowan took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, but Rachael McMahon’s sacrifice fly in the second inning tied the game. Samantha Garcia walked to lead off the fourth inning and McMahon singled to move Garcia into scoring position. Jeane Drury then doubled to drive home both runners and give Pace a 3-1 lead.

The Hawks scored again in the fifth inning but starter Caitlin McCann (3-0) kept Chowan from scoring again. McCann threw a complete game and allowed two runs on six hits.

In the second game, Lauren Bell scored Pace’s only run with a solo homer in the third inning. Chowan then scored twice in the fifth inning and once more in the sixth. Chelsea Shea (1-1) pitched a complete game and gave up three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits. She also struck out four batters.

Pace will continue its road trip with a stop in Petersburg, Va. for a doubleheader against Virginia State University on Friday at 1 p.m.
