Briarcliff Schools' Sinha Charts District's Future

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Kusum Sinha has big plans for the future of the Briarcliff Manor school district.

After years of planning, the Briarcliff Manor Board of Education created Sinha’s position this year as the district’s assistant superintendent of curriculum and human resources.

Sinha, who holds a doctorate in educational leadership from St. John’s University, comes to Briarcliff with more than 12 years in education. She most recently worked as an assistant superintendent for the Ramapo Central School District and before that as an assistant superintendent for the Croton-Harmon School District.

But she says working in the Briarcliff Manor Union Free School District is the fulfillment of a longtime dream.

“Briarcliff is the premiere district in Westchester County,” Sinha said. “There are so many great opportunities here for Briarcliff students that you don’t find anywhere else. I think there is also great potential for educators to do some really innovative things here.”

As the head of curriculum and human resources, Sinha says she is taking the initiative to ensure the district’s programming meets and exceeds all state regulations. But the position also involves bringing the district together into a more cohesive unit, she said.

“We want to make sure what we bring to our kids is not interrupted,” she said. “There are so many programs going on, like the new reading program at (Todd Elementary School) and a new way of learning math. My goal is to make sure we have continuity when they go to the middle school.”

The foundation at the district is already very strong, Sinha said.

“We have amazing opportunities here at the district for our students and educators,” she said. “I think the student outcome you see here speaks for itself, but we can always do better.”

Sinha said she is eager for the beginning of the school year next week.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to know our whole community. It’s going to really be exciting getting to know the landscape of the school district and getting to know how our students interact with our faculty and staff,” she said, adding that she has several goals to accomplish before the end of the school year.

“At the end of the year I hope to have a real sound understanding of the next steps for our district. There are student learning objectives that need to be implemented and with rigor and quality.”
