Engel, who represents parts of Southern Westchester, said Trump's response, where he equated the actions of neo-Nazis and white supremacists to protesters was a "disgrace to the office of the President."

"His words were an affront to our shared American values and deserve our condemnation, which is why my colleagues and I have taken this extraordinary step to introduce a resolution to censure," Engel said. "We must send a clear message to the President that this type of rhetoric is not acceptable from the Commander-in-Chief.”

More than 79 Democrats in the House of Representatives have co-sponsored the legislation which also calls for Trump to fire any and all White Hosue advisors who have urged him to cater to the white supremacist movement like Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka. Bannon was fired Friday.

"Steve Bannon should have never been a White House official, and his ouster is no substitute for moral leadership from the President," said Lowey, whose district includes all of Rockland and much of Westchester. "The President’s defense of neo-Nazis and white supremacists is a failure of moral leadership. He is on the wrong side of history."

The last president to be censured was Andrew Jackson in 1834, though the censure was expunged in 1837.
