Daniel Lavelle, who previously taught social studies at Briarcliff High School was arrested and charged Wednesday night with endangering the welfare of a child, a Class A misdemeanor, according to the Westchester County District Attorney's Office.

Lavelle had recently been in contact with at least one Briarcliff High School student via text and social media, Superintendent James Kaishian said in a letter to parents. Kaishian said some of the communication was criminal in nature. The DA's office declined to provide further details at this time.

"Although I cannot be more descriptive regarding this now criminal proceeding, we are not aware that any students were exposed to inappropriate physical contact or harm," Kaishian said.

Kaishian said he was "saddened" and "deeply troubled" by the situation but said he was confident the school will continue to provide a safe and supportive environment for students.

'"Student welfare has always and will continue to be our guiding principle," Kaishian said.

Lavelle was released on $5,000 bail and is due back in court on June 14.
