BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Thousands of people in Briarcliff Manor lost power, roads were closed, streets flooded, and trees fell when Hurricane Sandy swept into the area in late October.
About 67 percent – 2,000 out of 2,964 – of all Consolidated Edison customers in Briarcliff Manor were without power during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, according to Con Edison reports. More than eight trees fell on houses, and dozens more took out power lines and closed roads, Briarcliff Manor Fire Chief Mike King said at the time. Briarcliff Manor Public Works crews spent weeks cleaning up the fallen trees and repairing roads, and Village Manager Philip Zegarelli said the costs to the village "could be great."
“With all of the work that had to be done, we’re significantly over a quarter of a million dollars now,” Zegarelli said in December. “We don’t have all of the numbers yet, but a lot of it is the overtime to our Public Works employees for all of the cleanup they did.”
Officials said it could be months before the village is repaired completely. Con Edison crews are expected to work off and on in Briarcliff Manor over the next several weeks making permanent repairs to the village's power lines.
Zegarelli said Friday that it would take officials "a little more time" to determine the total cost of the damage.
