Paul Smith, an East Norriton firefighter, was diagnosed with Miller-Fisher syndrome after suffering a sudden medical episode on Nov. 14 that severely impacted his physical well-being, according to GoFundMe organizer Mindy Thomas.

"Unfortunately this has left Phil with what most likely is a long hospital stay and some extensive physical therapy once he is able to be released," Thomas wrote.

She launched the GoFundMe page in hopes of raising enough funds to assist Smith's wife, Shannon, who gave birth to their son Leo on Nov. 6.

"Shannon is currently on unpaid maternity leave and will most likely not be able to go back to work for some time with Phil being in the hospital," Thomas added.

The couple also has two daughters at home Anna, 11, and Clella, 20 months.

Over $7,200 had been raised on the fundraiser as of Nov 24.
