Village Manager Philip E. Zegarelli noted in his latest report that the Police Benevolent Association is accepting new or gently used winter coats and new, unwrapped toys at police headquarters, 1111 Pleasantville Road at any time through Friday, Dec. 16.

The toys will be distributed to patients at the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, Zegarelli said.

The Briarcliff Manor Fire Department partnered with the Westchester County Sheriff's Association to collect toys for patients at the Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla.

Toys were gathered up at an event held Saturday, Dec. 10, at the firehouse on Pleasantville Road. Elves that donated toys were served light refreshments.

The fire department’s annual Santa’s Express is set for 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18.

Instead of a sleigh, Santa will be touring the village on one of the department’s fire engines.

Residents will know Santa is on his way when they hear sirens in their neighborhood.

In other community news from Zegarelli:

Coyote update: Residents have expressed concerns about recent coyote sightings in the village. While the woodland critter is normally timid and serious human/pet-coyote interactions are rare, fears about the wild dog have risen following reports of a rabid coyote biting two people in Ossining last month and attacks on family pets in New Castle this past spring.

Zegarelli advised residents to maintain safe distances from coyotes and report sightings and incidents. Pets should not be let outside alone, or even in fenced-in yards. When walking their dogs, owners should keep them on a leash and under tight control.

The village has conferred with the state Department of Environmental Conservation and has been told that it can’t trap or put down a coyote unless there is strong evidence that it is sick or a threat to humans or other animals, Zegarelli said.

The village has been seeking advice on how to handle the situation from wildlife experts and trappers, the village manager added.

Library/community center:  This month's programs include Pillow Fort Night. The free event is set for 7-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16. Event aimed at ninth- through 12th-graders. Using provided materials, teams will compete to build the best forts ... then systematically destroy them! Snacks will be served.

Recreation and Parks: Get your paddle on! Permits for platform tennis are available by visiting the recreation page at www.briarcliffmanor.org.

Mayor and Board of Trustees: The board's next public session is 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21 at the WJV Community Center.
