BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. -- The Village of Briarcliff Manor reminds residents about holiday closings, weather shifts, coyote news and more.
Weather: The mixture of snow, sleet and rain, combined with sudden temperature shifts, can cause hazards, the Village Manager says. People are asked to check their residential water spigots to ensure they are drained and valved off from inside the house.
The recent cold snap was sudden and colder for this time of year, but is expected to end on Sunday with temperatures in the 40s and 50s, the manager says. The sudden shifts can cause “heaving” of the ground/road surfaces, just enough to crack or damage water mains. Pipes are especially vulnerable as the ground freezes and expands, and melts and contracts.
Water “welling up” to the surface is a sign there may be a damaged water main in need of immediate attention. Residents should report any incidents to the VBMPD at 914-941-2130.
Santa:The annual fire department's annual Santa’s Express will be on Sunday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Santa will be touring the Village on the fire engines. People are asked to wait outside to see Santa when they hear the sirens in their neighborhood.
Closings: The Village Hall Offices, DPW and Recreation will all be closed on Friday, Dec. 23 and Monday, Dec. 26. There will be a regular sanitation pick-up on Friday, Dec. 23. The Dec. 26 pick-up will be combined with Tuesday’s Dec. 27 pick-up. The library will be closed on Saturday, Dec. 24 and Sunday, Dec. 25. They resume regular hours on Monday, Dec. 26 (10 a.m.-6 p.m.).
Coyotes: Regarding recent coyote sightings, residents are asked to continue to note, take pictures of and report coyote sightings and incidents. The community should avoid letting unaccompanied pets outside, even in a fenced backyard. Pet owners should also avoid walking pets unleashed. Anyone who sees a coyote should not confront it, but retreat to the safety of home.
Meetings: The Mayor and Board of Trustees meet on Wednesday, Dec. 21, starting with a 7 p.m. work session and regular meeting at 8 p.m. Both meetings take place at the WJV Community Center.
The mayor, two trustees and the village justice are up for reelection in 2017. The non-partisan tradition of local candidate nominations are administered by the People’s Caucus. The following meetings are coming up at at the WJV Community Center:
