Christine Camarra of the Somers Intermediate School learned of her cancer in May 2018, after feeling discomfort and generally not feeling like herself, said the GoFundMe page created by Dympna Carroll said.
Through testing it was discovered there was a mass on her ovary. Things quickly developed and surgery was scheduled. Doctors were optimistic that this mass could easily be removed, and life would continue as normal for Camarra and her husband George and their three beautiful girls, ranging in age from 9 to 4 years old.
"Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. One year later, Christine is facing the fight of her life," the page said. "Christine has been diagnosed with a VERY rare ovarian germ cell cancer."
Since her diagnosis, she has been through four surgeries, five CT scans, two MRI’s, one PET scan, countless blood work and three cycles of intensive chemotherapy.
In March of this year, Camarra was excited to return to her students but was told the unimaginable...cancer was back and had spread.
"Sloane-Kettering told Christine that she was outside of their expertise and referred her to Dana-Farber," the page said.
Currently, Camarra is about to begin even more intensive chemotherapy at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, which will require extensive travel and displacement from her family.
"Christine has a difficult fight ahead and will need all the support we can give," said Carroll. "We are hoping to provide some financial support for Christine, George, and their girls to help alleviate the stress of mounting medical bills, travel expenses, and hardships that will arise."
In Camarra’s own words, “Life is precious, and I don’t intend to give up now. I’ve got three little girls watching me daily and I will continue to show them that I am a fighter."
