Seniors At Atria In Briarcliff Go Grateful

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- A group of seniors from Atria Senior Living in Briarcliff Manor are venturing out into the community this month to perform acts of gratitude, and they're hoping others -- regardless of age -- will do the same.

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, they plan to visit the village's first responders, and library and post office workers in celebration of World Gratitude Day, and they'll come bearing special treats to show their gratitude.

Residents will also man appreciation stations with free hugs, special giveaways and other ways to show appreciation to Atria staff and visitors.

The local effort is part of the "GoGrateful" campaign, during which residents from Atria Senior Living communities across the United States and Canada will go on similar outings. Atria staff members are helping the seniors mobilize by providing transportation and accompanying the groups as they demonstrate their appreciation for others.

The company has 189 facilities in 27 states and seven Canadian provinces.

"Atria residents have lived long, interesting lives," said Ronda Watson, senior VP of culinary and Engage Life. "Given the negative temperament in the world right now, they, of all people, understand that random acts of gratitude can have a truly positive impact on people."

On Atria's website for the initiative, folks can view shareable images of others' expressions of gratitude. Members of the public are also encouraged to participate. Use #goGrateful in social media posts. The initiative hopes to reach 25,000 expressions of gratitude by the end of World Gratitude Day.

The website also lists some suggestions for showing gratitude. Two include taking cookies to a local firehouse or buying flowers at a grocery store and giving them to the checkout clerk.
