The events leading up to the arrests began in the City of Rye on Tuesday, March 11, just after 7:30 p.m., when officers responded to a call at the Rye Colony Apartments on Peck Avenue regarding several men fleeing from an abandoned vehicle, the City of Rye Police Department said on Wednesday, March 12.

Upon arrival, officers found a black 2025 Nissan Altima with New York registration LRF2969. The vehicle was running but unoccupied, with three flat tires.

Investigators determined that the same vehicle had been pursued by Greenwich Police just minutes earlier, at 7:20 p.m., in connection with an attempted vehicle theft. Greenwich Police had tried to stop the car using stop sticks, but the effort was unsuccessful, according to City of Rye Police.

While officers were securing the scene, Rye Police received multiple calls from residents reporting that men were running through their yards.

One officer spotted a suspect, later identified as Muhammad S. Abdulmalik, 19, of the Bronx, dressed in all black, allegedly running into a wooded area near Beaty Court. When the officer attempted to detain him, Abdulmalik pulled his arm away and sprinted toward Thistle Lane, police said.

After a brief foot chase, he was caught and arrested, according to authorities.

With assistance from the Port Chester Police Department, officers then found and arrested a second suspect, Yadiel Baez, 20, of Waterbury, CT, nearby, the department added.

Both men were transported to Rye Police Headquarters, where they were processed, fingerprinted, and charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration.

They are scheduled to appear in Rye City Court on Tuesday, March 25, at 9:00 a.m.
