In an announcement on Monday, Sept. 30, Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard revealed a $41 million capital investment from New York State that will go towards Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital.
The secured funding will pay for a "comprehensive revitalization strategy" focusing on expanding and modernizing key areas of the hospital, officials said.
This will include:
- Redesigning the emergency department so that it can accommodate 50,000 visits a year, a 150 percent increase over the current capacity of 20,000 annual visits;
- Expanding the hospital's operating rooms and outfitting them with state-of-the-art equipment to reduce the need for transferring patients;
- Modernizing the Family Health Center, which will include improving the lobby, exam rooms, and support centers to enhance patient experience.
"This is more than a financial investment — it’s a commitment to collaboration and continued advocacy for the health, wellbeing, and future of Mount Vernon," Patterson-Howard said, adding, "This transformation will provide our residents with state-of-the-art facilities and comprehensive care, underscoring our collective dedication to a healthier future for our city."
The hospital's Vice President for Clinical Services and Executive Director, Regginald Jordan, also addressed the upcoming changes:
"This plan is a direct outcome of listening to those voices and constant support from our local and state officials," Jordan said, adding, "This initiative goes beyond mere infrastructure; it's about building on Montefiore’s ongoing commitment to deliver exceptional, accessible healthcare that resonates with the needs of our communities."
Officials said that the funding for the transformation was secured with the help of Sen. Jamaal Bailey and Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow.
"Today's announcement is a landmark moment for healthcare in our district," Pretlow said, adding, "This vision not only promises enhanced healthcare services for our residents but also signifies a major step forward in our ongoing efforts to ensure everyone in our community has access to the high-quality care they deserve."
