The Flying Horses advanced to the state championship football game in Syracuse with a 20-14 win.
For the Huguenots, the loss was a heartbreaking end to a 10-1 season. Coach Lou DiRienzo admitted there were some little mistakes that contributed to his team’s defeat.
"We've had our mistakes along the way [throughout the season], but have never really gotten bit by those mistakes," DiRienzo said. "We made those tonight, and you can't do that with a team of this caliber. Troy was a well-coached and well-disciplined team."
Troy took a 20-7 lead into halftime.
New Rochelle sophomore running back Jordan Forrest scored on the final play of the third quarter on a 12-yard run to cut the lead to six. But ultimately, it wasn't enough.
"We were not consistent enough, both offensively and defensively," DiRenzio said. “I wish [Troy] well in Syracuse.”
Despite the loss, the Huguenots gained 153 yards on the ground, led by junior Jared Baron, who carried the ball 18 times for 78 yards.
