BEDFORD, N.Y. Wednesdays game between Fox Lane and Keio showcased two contrasting styles of baseball. The Foxes power and potent offense faced the Unicorns small-ball, hit-and-run style.
Power won the duel, as the Foxes (1-1) piled on the runs in a 10-3 victory that was never really in doubt. Fox Lane jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and never looked back.
Keio (2-2) coach Rocky Pasquale was direct when asked how his team could overcome a team with such a high-powered offense.
You dont, Pasquale said. With a team like this, when they throw up 10 runs, we did a good job holding them down to 10. We gave them a couple that made our job even more tough, more difficult to do. But you dont. You cant do that. Against good teams, its hard for us to keep it down.
A Keio error in the second inning led to four Fox Lane runs, which Pasquale said set the whole tone for the rest of the game. The Unicorns tried to close the gap with one run in the top of the fourth inning to make it 5-1, but Fox Lane answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
When Keio scored twice more in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 7-3, the Foxes again added two more runs to increase their advantage. Fox Lane scored once more in the bottom of the sixth to end the afternoons scoring.
Keio finished with three runs on seven hits and committed two errors. Fox Lane was efficient with 10 runs on 12 hits and one error.
The Foxes averaged 13.4 runs per game last season. And while Coach Matthew Hilles doubts this years team will reach those figures, he does hope that the offense, which returns six of nine starters, can explode.
If the right people fill those holes and do the right job, hopefully our offense can do a number again for us this year, Hilles said. I dont know necessarily that well put up those kinds of numbers. That might be a once in a lifetime coaching experience with those numbers. If were close, well be okay.
