Committee Talks School Renovation at Board Meeting

The district’s capital planning committee gave recommendations for the building condition and major needs of West Patent Elementary School and Fox Lane Middle School at the Bedford Central School District Board of Education meeting last night.

The committee gave three options to fix major problems with West Patent Elementary School, with an emphasis on making it more water-tight. Ways in which they intend on accomplishing this goal include replacing the roof and making civil engineer draining improvements.

The first option called for a gut renovation of academic pods and would cost around $27.5 million. This would take the longest construction time and portable classrooms would need to be brought on campus for use for the entire school year.

The second option, also the most expensive at a total cost of around $37.4 million, would require building a new two-story classroom wing on the north edge of campus towards the parking lot. This option does not plan on adding capacity to the school but making the building more efficient. The Board said that during construction, students would be unaffected and able to remain in their existing pods.

The last option considered a “hybrid plan” and consists of building a new one-story classroom wing, while renovating existing ones.  This would cost around $32.5 million.

For the Fox Lane Middle School, the capital planning committee suggested possible actions including a science lab and house lobby renovation, expanding cafeteria capacity that could be used as a multipurpose room and expanding classroom inventory.

The committee also recommended possible actions that could help to identify the main entry to the building.
