POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- Pound Ridge boasts a surprisingly diverse architectural history, with an abundance of sophisticated mid-century modern influence found throughout the town.

This Northern Westchester town has played host to an impressive number of Modern homes due to the presence of the "Harvard Five"; a group of prominent architects including Philip Johnson, Landis Gores, Eliot Noyes, John M. Johansson and Marcel Brueur.

"Moderns are all about space and light," said Joan Keating, real estate agent for William Raveis Real Estate. "As far back as the 30s, architects started to build many more non-traditional homes, which gave way to an exciting period in art and architecture."

To celebrate the town's contribution to the history of Modern architecture, the Pound Ridge Historical Society recently opened an exhibit entitled “Modern in Pound Ridge: 20th Century Architecture and Lifestyle.” The exhibit examines the local buildings and architects that helped bring the Modern style to Pound Ridge and show how design has developed since the 1930s. "The exhibit has a beautiful historical review and context," said Keating. "Architects like Vuko Tashkovich, who built 28 houses in Pound Ridge and helped shape Modern architecture, are featured."

Among the many mid-century homes in Pound Ridge, 54 Lower Shad Road features many of the elements that have made Moderns beloved by homeowners. Built in 1968, the three bedroom home sits on three supremely private acres with a pool, pool house, tennis court and features a wall of glass that allows natural light to illuminate the entire room.

"This home is a perfect example of a beautiful mid-century Modern and utilizes its space in such a unique way," said Keating, the listing agent at 54 Lower Shad Road. "I love showing Moderns because I have such a deep love for their style and history."

Listed for $1,165,000, 54 Lower Shad Road features 12-foot high ceilings, new hardwood flooring and a renovated kitchen with granite countertops. A hallmark of Modern style, the home's red cedar beams, large windows and open floor plans open up interior spaces and invite the outdoors inside.

"Moderns are carefully planned and executed by trained architects and sited to complement the surroundings," said Keating. "Just like so many great Moderns in Pound Ridge, every inch of 54 Lower Shad was meticulously built and crafted."
