BEDFORD, N.Y. -- The race to fill Senator George Latimer's seat is getting crowded.

Bedford Supervisor Chris Burdick, a Democrat, announced he is planning to run for the seat and represent the 37th district, which will become vacant when Latimer becomes Westchester County Executive.

“I am proud of my record of results in Bedford, from enacting progressive policies to enhancing services, and boosting the financial strength of the town," Burdick, who was re-elected last month, said. "I am looking forward to taking that record, and my work ethic, to the next level by representing the residents of the 37th Senatorial District.”

Burdick, who was elected supervisor in 2013, joins Assemblyman Shelley Mayer (D-Yonkers) and White Plains teacher Kat Brezler as declared candidates. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano is also expected to run for the Democratic nomination.

A date for a special election has not been called. If elected, Burdick said he would caucus with the Democrats rather than the Independent Democratic Conference.

The 37th Senate District covers the cities of New Rochelle, Rye, White Plains, Yonkers and the towns of Bedford, Harrison, Mamaroneck, North Castle, Rye, Eastchester.
