BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. -- At a state prison in Bedford Hills, moms and their babies are both behind bars, according to a report by lohud.com.
Responses throughout the years to the set-up at the maximum-security Bedford Hills Correctional Facility have been mixed, with some saying it allows mother and baby to bond, while others say it could be damaging to the children, the lohud.com report said.
In most prisons, babies born while their moms are locked up have to be given to a relative or foster care, the lohud.com story said.
At Bedford Hills, which has had a nursery since 1901, women can be dropped from the program for breaking rules and -- despite its cheerful Winnie the Pooh decor -- the unit is still patrolled by armed officers, the lohud.com story said.
