Board of Education Says Goodbye to Student Member

Troy Chryssos, a senior at John Jay High School, has served on the Katonah-Lewisboro Union Free School District’s Board of Education since July 6, 2011. On June 9, Chryssos said goodbye to his fellow Board members as his term ends and he prepared to graduate.

Chryssos was elected by his peers at John Jay High School to serve as the student member of the Board in the Spring of 2010. Members of the student body have been serving on the Board of Education for five years, something the Board of Education president, Michael Gordon, thinks “adds a different voice and a different perspective, one that we would see and hear every single day but never up hear at this table.”

Gordon told Chryssos at the Board of Education meeting on June 9 that he represented the student body well.

“He really has demonstrated to us why it is so important to have a member of the student population serve on our Board of Education,” Gordon said. “He has been an absolutely outstanding member.”

Chryssos, who addressed his fellow Board members at the end of the meeting, said he was appreciative of them and all the hard work they do for the school.

“It’s been a lot of fun. I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything else. I’ve learned a ton. I learned how much you guys do, how often under-appreciated your work is, and I want to say thank you for being so welcoming to me, and having me on. It’s been great,” Chryssos said.

As a student member of the Board of Education Chryssos was expected to attend meetings regularly and discuss issues concerning John Jay High School.
