BEDFORD, N.Y. -- The Israel Cancer Research Fund will honor its chairman, Bedford Hills resident Kenneth Goodman, at its annual Tower of Hope Gala next month.

Goodman got involved with the organization after his first wife, Barbara, contracted pancreatic cancer and was under the care of Dr. Yashar Hirshaut, ICRF chairman and president emeritus.

After his wife died, Goodman endowed an ICRF research grant in her name. Every year he underwrites and hosts the Barbara S. Goodman Scientific Awards & Donor Recognition Evening.

The ICRF, established in 1975, helps fund cancer research in Israel. So far it has handed out more than $60 million in grants.

Honors that ICRF grant recipients have earned include: the Nobel Prize in chemistry, the G. H. A. Clowes Award from the American Association for Cancer Research, the Gairdner International Award, the Lasker Award in Basic Medical Research and the Israel Prize.

ICRF said the research it has funded has lead to the development of such life-saving drugs as Gleevec, Doxil and Velcade.

The research has also helped identify the location and chemical nature of the p53 tumor-suppressor gene and the Philadelphia Chromosome, the first abnormal chromosome found in leukemia.

Goodman served as director, president and chief operating officer at Forest Laboratories from 1998 to 2006. Later, he became the lab’s director and lead director.

He currently serves on Syracuse University’s board of trustees.

Goodman has been a member of the fund’s International Board of Trustees since 2003 and has served as its chairman since 2010.

Other guests at the gala will be Ben Brafman, noted white-collar defense lawyer, who will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

Guest speakers include Ambassador Dani Dayan, the newly appointed consul general of Israel in New York and Dr. Howard Cedar, an ICRF professor and a pioneer in DNA research.

The gala will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Gotham Hall, an event space in the heart of Manhattan.

It's at 1356 Broadway at 36th Street.

The cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7:30 p.m.
