Art Center Ready For Start of Fall Classes

Katonah, NY-- With school starting again, and science, history and English acting as priorities in children’s (and, thus, parents’) minds, it is easy to forget about the arts. That is where establishments like the Katonah Art Center come in.

For 15 years, Loren Anderson has owned and operated the school and has seen it blossom from location to location, as it has moved three times. Over just a two year period, during the center’s final move to 131 Bedford Road, the number of students has more than doubled, going from 200 to 500.

Sarah Miller, the manager of the center, is not surprised, and she knows the true benefits of art for a child.

“It gives kids a chance to build self-esteem, to have their own artistic license, and be in charge of something,” said Miller. “They’re in school all day learning by someone else’s process or syllabus of teaching, but [the arts] put them behind the wheel. It’s important for kids to have that control.”

For kids who seemingly cannot find great achievement in either athletics or general education, Anderson knows that the arts act as a needed successful release.

“We have a lot of kids here who are not great at sports, and who may not the best students. They are more right brained than left,” Anderson says, “and this is the place where they are rewarded for their ability. They do beautiful work, and develop pride and self-esteem.”

By the beginning of next week, the center will begin their classes once more. Lessons like cartooning, sewing, drawing and painting, and pottery are offered, along with many others.
