The Putnam Valley Library will be hosting a viewing party at Putnam Valley Town Park on Monday for the solar eclipse. During the eclipse, the sun will disappear behind the moon, turning daylight into twilight, and leading to a quick plunge in temperature before streamers of light streaking across the sky around the moon's silhouette.

The event will begin at 1:45 p.m. and go until 3:30 p.m. and residents are asked to bring folding chairs. Science teacher Fred DePalma will be on hand to help explain what is happening as it takes place and to make sure everyone watches the eclipse safely. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

It will mark the first time a total solar eclipse will be visible from the mainland United States since 1979.

The Aug. 21 eclipse will also be the first to sweep across the entire country since 1918. After Aug. 21, the next total solar eclipse is due for April 2024.
