After Initial Delay, Tazza Cafe Opens in Katonah

KATONAH, N.Y.--The storefront that was home to Perks Coffee & Tea Bar has been shuttered for months, but on Tuesday, new tenant Tazza Cafe had its soft debut and opened for its first full day on Wednesday.

"People are as excited as we are that we're here,” said Katonah location manager Dan Samson, a recent New York University graduate who has worked for owner James Monica since he was 16.

"This town is great. The people are fantastic," said Samson.

Perks, former occupant of the spot on 197 Katonah Ave., closed its doors after 15 years in operation on March 31.

The most notable change for patrons who were used to frequenting Perks is technological: Tazza has working Wi-Fi, so those who like to take their Macbooks with them wherever they go now have a refuge to do so.

The shop’s opening, which was originally slated for May, was somewhat delayed due to logistical "hiccups" in getting permits and wrangling with health and building inspectors, said Samson.

After a string of evaluations and finishing touches, including cosmetic renovations such as redoing the counters, walls and floors, Tazza finally opened this week.

Monica also owns Tazza Cafés in four other locations: Somers, Millwood, Armonk—his first cafe—and Ridgefield, Conn.

Tazza Cafes have a full coffee and espresso menu, frozen drinks, smoothies and protein shakes, along with baked goods, wraps, salads, paninis and breakfast sandwiches.

The new Katonah coffee spot is open Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
