The severe cold could result in the risk of hypothermia or frostbite to those spending time outdoors without proper clothing.
"Some areas (in the Northeast) could experience their lowest December temperatures of this century," according to AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams.
We'll be getting a preview of the Arctic air Tuesday and Wednesday. While the daytime highs will be in the upper 30s, the wind-chill values will make it feel more like the upper 20s to low 30s both days.
Then comes the deep plunge, which will be ushered in by a chance of snow after midnight Wednesday into Thursday morning.
Thursday will be a cloudy day with the high temperature will struggle to reach the low 20s with real-feel temps in the single digits during the day and overnight lows of 10 degrees in the Lower Hudson Valley and the single digits in points north, including Putnam and Dutchess.
The sun returns Friday, but so too will the frigid temps, with the high in the low 20s and real-feel temps in the teens.
There is a chance of snow after midnight Friday into noon Saturday as the temperature climbs to a balmy 40 degrees during the day.
