El Niño could be ready to make a return later this year, impacting the weather across the United States and the Hudson Valley during the fall and winter, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The strength of El Niño will determine the impacts that it has on the eastern U.S. and the area, according to AccuWeather.com. A weaker El Niño could result in above-normal snowfall for the East Coast and Hudson Valley.

“The weaker the El Niño, the more favorable for impactful storms and snow in the East next winter,” AccuWeather Lead-Long Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok said.

There is a 50 to 55 percent chance for El Niño to develop starting around July, according to the report by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

The timing in the start of El Niño may play a key role with how active the upcoming hurricane season is in the Atlantic Ocean.

Disruptive winds produced by El Niño can limit the number of tropical systems that develop, according to Pastelok.
