Mamaroneck High School's varsity hockey team achieved a historic first on Sunday.

The Tigers held on for a 1-0 win over West Genesee in the New York State Class A championship game at Buffalo's HarborCenter.

It was the first-ever state title in hockey for coach Mike Chiapparelli's Tigers, who end the season 24-2.

Goalkeeper Tommy Spero led an outstanding defensive effort in the title game, making 27 saves for the Tigers, an experienced squad that boasts 15 seniors.

The lone goal of the game was scored by Michael Carducci in the first period. Carducci, a sophomore, missed the first 18 games of the season with mononucleosis.

Ewald was named second-team all-state. Teammate Will Kirk was named state player of the year and first-team all-state. Spero also earned first-team all-state honors. Alex Ewald was named second-team all-state. Chiapparelli was named state coach of the year.

It was Mamaroneck's first trip to the state final since 2009 when the Tigers fell to Greece Athena.
