The 22 inductees of the Byram Hills High School Cum Laude Society were "urged to try new opportunities, remember that actions are more important than words – and never stop learning," according to a press release from the district. Principal Chris Borsari called the students “the top of a very talented senior class,” and said the group had "earned high grades while managing to excel in a range of other activities," according to the release.

The new inductees are Sydney Brooks, Julia Deutsch, Stephanie Ding, Grace Eisenbiegler, Kacy Fishman, Sara Gelb, Jonathan Giardina, Inbal Hirschmann, Samuel Honig, Karina Ikeda, Adam Ingber, Andrei Isichenko, Daniel Jacobs, Karen Liu, Jessica Occhiogrosso, Kathleen Ryan, Alessandra Sauro, Itai Taubenfeld, Ryan Tissot, Cassandra Vitacco, Kara Zaborowsky and Helena Zhang, according to the release.

“These students should never be defined just by their very impressive GPAs,” Borsari said in the release, adding that the inductees "have pursued excellence in athletics, drama, science research and other areas of high school life."

Along with the students, Social Studies teacher Joanna Lewick and Athletic Director Michael Gulino were inducted into the Cum Laude Society during the Oct. 29 ceremony at the high school. Last year’s faculty inductees, mathematics teacher Michele Delamonico and Dr. H. Evan Powderly, the principal of H.C. Crittenden School, offered advice.

Delamonico told the students that a recent illness, which kept her out of school for much of last year, reminded her of what was important in her life: being a wife, mother and teacher, according to the release.

“What part of your life is so important that you would do anything to preserve it?” Delamonico said, while also urging the students "to remember that it is actions, not words, that most inspire others," according to the release. “Always be the best version of you that you can be."

Powderly recalled the students' activities as boys and girls at Crittenden, and was proud of the accomplishments they had earned since, according tot he release.

“The whole of life is the process of learning,” Powderly said in the release.

Social Studies teacher Sandra Abt, the chapter president, inducted the students into the Byram Hills Cum Laude Society, the local chapter of a national organization modeled on Phi Beta Kappa.
