The shooting took place around 1209 p.m., Monday, Dec. 9, when the City of Poughkeepsie Police received a 911 call from a person reporting he had shot and killed the victim, said Det. Lt. Matt Clark.

Responding officers found the person shot, a 21-year-old City of Poughkeepsie resident, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Clark said.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A handgun was recovered from underneath his body, he added.

The shooter, a 24-year-old Poughkeepsie resident, waited at the scene for police to arrive. He claimed self-defense and requested an attorney.

The shooter, a holder of a Dutchess County pistol permit, had unloaded the handgun used prior to police arrival and placed it on the front seat of his vehicle and turned it over to the police, Clark said.

He was brought to police headquarters and a county public defender was assigned as his attorney. The Public Defender claimed his client's right to remain silent.

Two witnesses came to the police headquarters and gave statements as to what they saw and heard, Clark said.

The investigation into the incident is continuing. Anyone who may have witnessed this shooting is asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police at 845-451-7577.
