A man found on a city street died from a gunshot wound in Northern Westchester while police say a person of interest is in custody.

The incident took place in Peekskill around 4:15 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 29 in the 600 block of John Street.

According to Peekskill Police Chief Leo Dylewski, officers responded to John Street for a report of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers located a 35-year-old man who was immediately given medical aid by officers, the chief said.

Due to the severity of the injuries, the victim was transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital by officers in a marked police car. The victim was later transferred to Westchester Medical Center where he died from his injuries, Dylewski said.

"We currently have persons of interest in police custody," he added.

This is an ongoing investigation being led by the Peekskill Police Department.
