WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- On May 3 through the 4, United Way Westchester and Putnam will launch its Give Local Westchester & Putnam campaign. The 24-hour online giving event asks the community to donate to 117 local, not-for-profit agencies that support the community through the arts, education, elder care, crisis support and more. Nationally, Give Local America raised more than $68 million last year.

Here’s the story of one local organization that will be looking for support during Give Local this year.

RideConnect Gives Seniors A Lift

When Patricia Jordan of Mount Kisco first started volunteering with RideConnect she saw it as a way to help older adults in her community, but never realized how much it would add to her life.

“When I started volunteering with RideConnect , my main objective was to help older people maintain their independence and remain in their own homes, says Jordan. “What they don’t realize is how grateful I am to them for allowing me to hear their stories.” RideConnect, a program of Family Services of Westchester, works with community Volunteers to help older adults maintain their independence by providing transportation to seniors, age 60+, who are in need.

David Bubser of Bedford Hills uses RideConnect to volunteer, shop and maintain what is most important to him in his life.

“When my wife died, I fell into a deep depression. To help pull myself out of it, I got out of the house and started volunteering in the community, and found that helping others and seeing them improve has caused me to improve too. Being involved with others on this level has helped me continue to lead a very fulfilling life,” said Bubser.
