The following is a reader's response to the Daily Voice lifestyle article, "Who Knew Mute Swans Were Such Coastal Pests?"
To the editor:It is bizarre that because the mute swan had the misfortune of being released here only over a century ago they are made a target for extermination. Should we declare war on all non-native species?
All wildlife deserves legal protection from cruelty regardless of when they "arrived". These swans are not ornaments or nuisances; they are beautiful living creatures that are a part of the ecology.
Many factors affect habitat and vegetation, and studies on the swan’s negative impact on the environment have been inconclusive. These swans should not be made the scapegoats.
The only aggressors here are those killing these poor birds. Let the mute swans live in peace.
