Rometty, 56, is in her second year as head of Armonk-based IBM, for which she is the company’s first and only female to run the 102-year-old technology company.
She has been “sinking IBM's resources into commercializing Watson, the 'Jeopardy'-playing supercomputer,” Fortune said. “Rometty believes that Watson, a machine that can not only crunch numbers but also learn things, represents new sales opportunities for Big Blue.”
She has also been pushing into underserved markets like Africa and gaining new customers in marketing and finance, the write-up by Fortune said.
On Fortune’s list of the 50 Most Powerful Women In Business, Rometty was followed in the Top 5 by PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman, Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.
In March, The Miami Herald reported that Rometty had doubled her salary during her second year as CEO to $15.4 million. She reportedly bought a condo in 2012 for $3.45 million in White Plains’ 1 Renaissance Square condominium development.
